Summer’s just around the corner, and there’s nothing worse than walking from the outdoor heat into… more indoor heat.
To make sure your HVAC system stays in good condition during the warm months, you need to take care of any maintenance problems before they get worse.
Not sure how to tell if your system needs any maintenance?
These six warning signs will let you know when your HVAC unit needs repairs.
1. Loud Sounds
Hearing loud noises inside your HVAC unit means there’s something seriously wrong.
For example, a squealing sound could mean the belt has slid out of place. This could cause other pieces to get loose and bang against each other. Leaving this problem alone could result in some pricey repairs.
Other grinding or grating sounds might even mean your entire unit needs to be replaced. Make sure you call a professional when you hear any of these noises. If you don’t, your HVAC system could break down, and that can be an expensive fix.
2. Weird Smells
If you start to notice an odd smell coming from your HVAC, you’ve got a problem on your hands. Air conditions, heaters, etc. aren’t supposed to smell bad.
You should be aware of these two different smells.
A foul scent probably means the insulation wire in your HVAC system has burned out. A musty smell means there’s mold growing somewhere inside your system, which could be a sign of a moisture problem.
Living with mold in your home can be dangerous, so make sure you get your system repaired if you notice any odors.
3. Electricity Bill Is High
When there’s something wrong with your HVAC system, it has a harder time working. This means it sucks up more energy and electricity to keep your house at the right temperature.
If your electricity bill is a lot higher than it should be, there’s probably something wrong with your HVAC system. Make sure you call a professional as soon as possible to diagnose the repairs.
4. Poor Airflow
There are a few different reasons your air flow might be inadequate.
If there isn’t a lot of air coming out of your vents, your compressor might be failing. If some of your rooms are getting cold while others stay warm, there’s a problem with your ductwork. You will need to get this repaired right away to avoid serious damages.
Other times, a buildup of debris can obstruct the vents themselves. Because the air is forced through this dirt, dust, and other particles, it can carry these things into the air of your home. This could pose a health risk to your family.
5. Allergies Flare Up
Contaminants can build up in your HVAC system and get carried into the air of your home. This could be what’s causing your allergies to flare up.
The next time your allergies flare up without a specific cause, call someone to come look at your HVAC system.
6. It’s Over 10 Years Old
HVAC systems aren’t designed to last much more than 10 years. If your system is reaching that age, it might be time to start shopping for a new one. At the very least, it’s time to get somewhere out there to make sure it’s still working the way it should.
What to Do when Your HVAC Unit Needs Repairs
